P2. Frustrated mom stuck behind slow car: Then she sees note in the window that changes everything

Like many moms out there, Hailey is always on the go—managing her family, keeping up with household chores, and working on her blog, Thoughts, Dots, and Tots. With so much on her plate, free time is a rare luxury. So, when Hailey found herself stuck behind a slow-moving truck one morning, her patience quickly wore thin. She had places to be and wasn’t in the mood to get stuck behind someone creeping along.

However, as she got closer to the truck at a stoplight, Hailey noticed something that changed her entire perspective. There, on the truck’s back window, was a hand-written sign that said: “Learning stick, sorry for any delay.”

In that moment, Hailey’s frustration melted away, and she felt a wave of understanding. She decided to share the experience in a heartfelt post on Facebook, which quickly went viral.

She wrote:

"As I was pulling into work, I was following this car. The sign in the back window said, 'Learning stick, sorry for any delay.' Knowing this information, I was very patient with their slow shifting, and honestly, they were doing pretty well for still learning. Then I asked myself a tough question: Would I have been just as patient if the sign hadn’t been there?"

"I can almost definitely say no."

Hailey’s realization led her to reflect on a deeper truth: we never know what someone is going through. She continued in her post:

"We don’t wear signs that illustrate our personal struggles. You don’t see signs taped to people’s shirts that say, 'Going through a divorce,' or 'Lost a child,' or 'Feeling depressed,' or 'Diagnosed with cancer.' If we could read visually what those around us are going through, we would definitely be nicer. But we shouldn’t have to see signs and have reasons to treat strangers with kindness. We should do it anyway, whether we know what is going on or not. Whether they deserve it or not."

This simple message struck a chord with many, serving as a powerful reminder to practice patience and compassion in our everyday lives, even when we’re feeling rushed or stressed. Hailey’s encounter with the driver of the truck became a moment of grace, reminding her—and all of us—that sometimes, slowing down and showing kindness is the most important thing we can do.

This story is a beautiful reminder that we all carry hidden struggles, and the world could be a much kinder place if we approached each other with understanding, even when it’s not obvious what someone might be facing.
