His early exposure was largely due to his grandfather, a seasoned pawnbroker who owned Sam’s Loans, a pawn shop on Michigan Avenue in Detroit, Michigan. Sam’s Loans, the family’s original pawn shop, would later be transformed into a restaurant called Gold Cash Gold. In 1978, Gold opened his own pawn shop, American Jewelry and Loan, at the Green-8 Shopping Center on 8 Mile Road in Oak Park, Michigan. In 1993, he relocated the shop to a larger space on Greenfield Road near 8 Mile, in a 50,000-square-foot former bowling alley. The business flourished, eventually expanding to five locations and serving around 1,000 customers daily, a testament to Gold’s hard work and dedication.

Gold’s family played an essential role in his life and business. He married Lily in 1975, and together they raised two children, Ashley and Seth, both of whom would later join the family business. Seth attended the University of Michigan and now manages the store’s marketing division. He takes pride in his modern approach, which has driven the company’s marketing efforts beyond traditional channels like the Yellow Pages.

Ashley also joined the family enterprise, bringing her expertise in business administration and gemology to American Jewelry and Loan. With a bachelor’s degree from Michigan State University and a graduate diamond certification from the Gemological Institute of America, she has worked at the pawn shop for over fifteen years. Although she took a brief hiatus for maternity leave, her presence has been invaluable to the business’s growth.

The show officially premiered on August 16, 2010, to a strong viewership, reaching over two million people. The premiere included memorable moments, like a customer bringing in a cannon and another with a homemade stripper pole, which captivated audiences. From diamond transactions to unusual items, the show gave viewers a taste of the exciting world of pawnbroking.

However, Hardcore Pawn wasn’t without its controversies. Some critics accused Gold of copying the concept from Pawn Stars, another popular reality TV series based in Las Vegas. Launched in 2009, Pawn Stars featured the Harrison family at their shop, Gold & Silver Pawn, and became an immediate hit with its focus on antique and vintage items.

Despite comparisons to Pawn Stars, Gold defended Hardcore Pawn, emphasizing its authenticity and unique approach. He argued that his show offered a gritty, realistic look at life in a Detroit pawn shop, focusing on real people and real situations, unlike the polished, antique-centered format of Pawn Stars. This commitment to authenticity, he believed, was the true draw for viewers.
